Open interest and volume of trading

When examining newspaper quotes, one will encounter a column labelled open interest. This is the number of contracts outstanding, which in turn is equal to the number of all long positions and equal to the number of all short positions. Sometimes these figures are delayed by a day. The volume of trading indicates the number of trades in one day. Sometimes, when there is immense trading activity, the volume might exceed the open interest.
