Option
Options are derivative contracts that give the right (but not the obligation) to enter into a future transaction, with some aspects of the trade fixed today. For example, a European put gives the right to the holder to sell the underlying asset, at a predetermined price on a fixed future date. A holder of the asset can therefore purchase the put as an insurance against a price decline.
Options are loosely categorized with respect to their optionality features in
- European calls and puts
- American calls and puts
- More exotic options, with more complicated structures. Asian, bermudan, barrier, cliquet and parisian options are some examples of exotic contracts.
